People with an undergraduate degree may take coursework from SLIS Indianapolis to qualify for public library certification; you may do so as a graduate non-degree seeking student. Coursework for this is also available through the Ivy Tech statewide Library Technical Assistant program (LTA).
Information about courses for each specialization or certification can be found on the Degree Checklists page: http://www.slis.iupui.edu/student/current/checklists.asp.
Yes, SLIS at Indianapolis offers all courses for the MLS and certifications. Most coursework and all required courses are available online. Students can take up to 6 credits from the Bloomington campus.
The MLS is an Indiana University Degree. Students graduating from summer of 2013 onward will have a degree from the School of Informatics and Computing, Indiana University, Indianapolis.
This is an ALA-accredited MLS degree, and is listed on a resume like this:
Master of Library Science, Indiana University, Indianapolis, 20xx.
All coursework for an MLS needs to be completed within 5 years, to ensure currency of information.
A student who attends full-time at 9 credits a semester / term can complete the degree in four terms: 1 calendar year plus one more semester; summers have many classes scheduled so you do not have to stop during the summer.
Many working students take one or two courses a term. At a steady pace of 3 courses per year, the degree can be completed in 4 years; at 6 per year, in 3 years.
